Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club 4 hour race
The threat of rain stayed away, the classic Yellowmundee track at the foot of the Blue Montains was in great condition and the 275 + riders in the first big event of the 2006 mountain bike calender provided some spectacular racing.
In the solo mens category, Cody Stevenson (FRF Couriers / Caravello) (in photo), on a borrowed mountain bike too large for him, with shoes that he hadn't worn for five years, spent the majority of the race in second position ahead of some of the 'toughest' endurance athletes in the country. Cody has spent the past few seasons in the tough semi-pro level of Belgian cycling and the undulating course was well suited to him. He dropped to fourth on the last lap due to lack of food and hydration (a big difference between road and mountain bike racing!). The race was won by Matthew Flemming (Clarence St Cyclery), with Matthew's wife winning the solo womens race. Just wait until they have kids.
In the mens pairs category, "Big Dog" Brian Price (Panther Cycles) (in photo) and his partner Trevor Hill (Blackman Cycles) ran out clear winners in this hotly contested category. Brians fluid pedalling style and awesome bike handling ability mask his pure speed. He is one to watch in the future.
The next event on the calender is the first round of the Working Week 8 hour series at Lidsdale State Forest near Lithgow, NSW on Sunday 12/2/06.
