On January 29th a 53 year old man died whilst climbing The Obituary (14) at Mt York. He fell 12 metres to the ground, suffering severe internal injuries and died a short time later. The victim was wearing a helmet, yet given the way that he fell, it offered limited protection.
First on the scene was a local guide who began to administer first aid. Also climbing at Mt York were two health practitioners who took over the first aid from the guide. The Careflight Rescue Helicopter arrived a short time later to evacuate the victim. A coroners report is due shortly.
The general view of the rescue team was that inappropriately placed protection was the cause of the accident - not equipment failure. Some protection popped when the leader fell (a hex and a nut??). The leader was relatively inexperienced.
We will post more information as it becomes available.
